Trattoria da Pipo: An Authentic Taste of the Mediterranean

Av: Leona Leslie

This place is a well kept secret, hidden away in the heart of Valletta. You are unlikely to stumble across this restaurant and if you do, even more unlikely to get a table. To get eat at this little underground hideaway, it is essential to book in advance. Not because the restaurant is pretentious in any way but because it is always packed with people who are in-the-know.

The restaurant is mostly open for lunch and its patrons are Maltese regulars who come with their families every week. But no matter who you are, the owners and waiters make you feel like a long lost friend.

There’s no menu and no prices (I think you pay the same amount no matter what you have). You choose your lunch from a glass cabinet at the front. Everything served is amazingly fresh, most of what’s on offer having been pulled from the sea that morning. Seafood is the main fare but you can also ask for pasta dishes and there is usually chicken, veal or something similar. The food is cooked simply with only the freshest ingredients and is strictly Mediterranean. On each table when you arrive there is a plate of olives and Gozitan cheese and bread drenched in olive oil - perfect for whetting your appetite. To finish off, the homemade desserts are divine.

If you’re looking for an authentic Mediterranean experience and delicious food, (both of which can be difficult to come by in Malta), you must go to this restaurant. It’s superb!
